Answer A: Towing with a Recumbent Trike, Tadpole or Delta?
This isn't a direct answer, but something that should be cleared up. With a trike in general it would seem the end with two wheels is going to have half as much load per tire, with twice as much surface area, as an upright. Yes, each wheel will have half the load. However, the overall area con...

Answer A: 2020 - August - Bugs
Diogmites on Manzanita Image 25 Jul 2005, Tonto National Forest, Arizona. I was hiking the Highline Trail below the Mogollon Rim when I came to an area with a lot of manzanita, just west of Horton Spring. This diogmites gave me time to set up the camera and let me get reasonably close. The...

Answer A: What is this small winged bug with a black spot on its back and dusky colored wings
Non-expert guess here, but I think that's some type of robber fly. Those are predatory flys, generally have the shape you show, and are rather large for flys. There are many species. Even experts can disagree on the exact ones. Hopefully the term "robber fly" will lead to more information. The...

Comment Post #276967 There are probably various critters that frequent the area, whether flooded or not. Probably most of them make good mink chow.

Comment Post #276934 Not a direct answer, but there are many great places in Yosemite outside the valley, and they tend to be less crowded. This might be a good time to explore them instead.

Answer A: What is the advantage of a running vest instead of a backpack for trail running?
A backpack bounces around too much when running. You need something tight-fitting and light. A vest with a few pockets is a lot better at that than a pack.

Answer A: At what temperature does rain gear become a liability?
A "rule" here is pointless. It matters what you feel like, and what the consequences are of getting the remaining layers wet. Your body will tell you whether it is too hot or too cold at the moment. Generally it is good to follow that by adjusting clothing accordingly. There are some exceptio...

Answer A: How far per record will a stationary GPS unit "travel"?
It is impossible to put a number on this because it depends on specifics of the device that are hard to know. How often does the device sample the GPS position? What is the noise on those positions? Does the device implement a minimum distance to new position? Does the minimum distance change ove...

Comment Post #275872 Some cropping would make this picture better, in my opinion. There is a lot of empty sky. I'd probably keep the same aspect ration, but cut to 2/3 in each dimension, keeping the bottom edge.

Question Why was comment deleted?
Yesterday (I think), I wrote a comment to this question. I can't show the exact text of the comment since it's now gone, but it was basically about telling the asker that "Ursack" should be defined. I don't know what it is, and I've some some backpacking and quite a bit of hiking. Probably other p...

Answer A: In the United States, how steep can a handicap-accessible trail be?
The most official document for the US is Forest Service Trail Accessibility Guidelines. There is no simple single number for maximum grade. Your are allowed steeper grade for shorter lengths, and the firmness of the treadway also factors into it. It gets complicated. You really need to at least...

Answer A: Adjusting derailleur with bike upside down, is it ok?
The derailleur can be adjusted just fine with the bike upside down. Flipping the bike doesn't change the side to side alignment of how the chain is fed to the gear set. However, one thing to watch out for is pinching your brake cables. If the brake cables go straight up from the levers on the ha...

Answer A: Advertise Outdoors on The Great Outdoors?
I'm not sure about how "right" using SE's community promotion ads against themselves is. I'd like to stick-it to SE too, but this feels morally wrong. However, here's an alternate idea, and what I plan to do. High rep users of a SE site that move here can mention that on their profile. Maybe th...

Comment Post #275827 In all the years I was on Stack Exchange, I never really understood the community promotion ads. I can see why SE would put up advertising, since that's their business. It didn't make sense to me why the community would want to advertise something else. That said, is it really fair to use the mech...

Answer A: 2020 - June - Flowers
Image alt text I found this beautiful Round Lobed Hepatica (Anemone americana) in the wild in Groton Massachusetts on 23 April 2020. The flower almost seemed to glow against the leaf litter of the forest floor.

Comment Post #275806 @Monica: To "continue where you left off", you need a lot more than just a clone of the original site. Data doesn't make a site. It takes a core of dedicated users, and then getting the word out that the new site is a good place to get answers.

Answer A: How to keep gloves from getting sweaty?
If your hands get too warm with gloves on, take the gloves off! My hands get sweaty too when shoveling snow. If you keep doing exercise, your hands might be quite comfortable with the gloves off. If they get too cold after a while, put the gloves back on. This is no different from wearing a j...

Comment Post #275807 That worked. Thanks. I did notice "Link to your SE account" before, but it wasn't clear what that was. I didn't really want to "link" the accounts, but rather start fresh here. Question Merge imported and new user accounts.
I noticed that some of the posts I wrote on SE Outdoors were imported, apparently to give the illusion of more activity here than there really is. It was a little disconcerting to see that, although I suppose I gave implicit permission for such things when agreeing to SE's license. However, now t...

Answer A: bicycles in scope?
While biking in general is on topic for Outdoors, the nitty gritty of bike mechanics and the like is better left for a site specific to bicycles.

Comment Post #275781 @James: The point is to show what the consensus is, so a vote counts just as much whether it's added to an existing positive or negative tally. I must say, I am disappointed in the widening of scope compared to the SE Great Outdoors.

Answer A: Equipment for driving off road in the Northeast United States
This isn't a direct answer to your question, but there are very few roads in the White Mountains that are open to the public that can't be used by passenger cars. A Subaru Forester would certainly cover pretty much all of them. Unlike out west, here in the northeast, there just aren't forest road...
