Answer A: Durable backpack that won't rip if carried on one shoulder
20-25 kg, or 45-55 pounds weight, is too much to expect to carry on your shoulders. That's especially true if only over one shoulder. Not only will that put a lot of stress on the shoulder straps, but a lot of stress on your shoulders too. However, that weight is within range of a "overnight" ba...

Answer A: To leaf peep in Adirondack Park, how many Scenic ViewPoints can you drive up to?
Adirondack park is large, especially by northeast US standards. There are quite a number of roads, from main paved roads to lesser paved roads, to good dirt roads, etc. There is something for every type of car, and plenty for ordinary road cars. There are more scenic turnouts than on a typical r...

Answer A: Where's this mountain road, in Kumamoto Japan?
This road looks too hazardous and narrow for automobiles, because there's no fence! What kind of road is this? Solely for pedestrians? That's clearly an automobile road. Having a steep dropoff on one side of the road is really not that unusual. The normal way to deal with that is to add a guardr...

Question Jig Radio, Wiesbaden?
I found the picture below in a stash of things that belonged to my father. My father served in the US army during WWII in the signal corps. He was referred to unofficially as a "radio repairman" apparently. After the war ended, he continued to be employed by the army as a civilian for a couple o...

Answer A: Where's this view of the Columbia River George located?
Yes, that picture does indeed seem to be taken from White Salmon, WA. Specifically, it seems to be taken from one of the hills above the east end of White Salmon, as can be seen here around the center of this picture: Here is the view roughly from there, looking downriver (west): This ...

Answer A: When and where to happen upon Aurora Borealis in Vancouver, BC?
The sun is currently in the more active part of its cycle, where solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CME) are more common. Auroras are caused when high-energy charged particles hit the vicinity of Earth. These charged particles spiral down to earth along the magnetic field lines, which inter...

Answer A: Which unit/State National Guard was this F-100 Super Saber from?
It seems that insignia is for the Air National Guard as a whole, not a particular unit. The minuteman is the emblem of the National Guard, and is a stylized drawing of the minuteman statue in Concord Massachusetts: (image copied from Minuteman National Park web site) The minuteman emblem f...

Answer A: At what angle do you hold out your arm at 10 and 15 degrees?
The missing context in this quote is apparently that you then use a part of your hand after the arm is extended to guage 10° in the sky. Look where you got that quote from, and it probably mentions the palm, 4 fingers together, or the like. The point is, this gives you a rough guide how far t...

Answer A: Where's this aurora borealis in Macoun, Saskatchewan?
This is aurora borealis, correct? No, that's the Milky Way. Its most of the rest of the galaxy we're in seen edge-on. It looks curved in the picture because a quite wide angle lens was used.

Answer A: How commonly can you see Aurora Borealis with the naked eye on Vancouver Island?
Vancouver island is fairly large, and extends from about 48°N to 51°N. I wouldn't say that auroras are common at these latitudes, but they will be visible occasionally. A photograph of an aurora from Vancouver island is certainly plausible without any additional information.

Answer A: Help! I found a lost dog - what do I do next?
I found a lost dog Probably not. Nothing in your description suggests the dog was actually lost. If dogs are supposed to be on leash in your particular area, then the dog got out somehow. That doesn't mean it's lost, though. The vast majority of dogs that get out when they aren't supposed to, ...

Question What is our position on picture identification with no research?
Yesterday a user posted two picture identification questions with no apparent prior research. The same user did this a couple of months ago too. At that time, I spent a few minutes with Google Earth and was easily able to find where a couple of the pictures were taken, so I conclude that even the b...

Answer A: Where was this image of Wilcox Pass, Alberta taken?
Obviously the left image can't be Wilcox Pass, so it was probably taken from Wilcox pass. This was easy to find in Google Earth: "Obviously the left image can't be Wilcox Pass" Why not? Because it's not a pass. There is a slight dip in the ridge at the top center of the picture, but i...

Answer A: Where was this image of Tchesinkut Lake taken?
I had never heard of Tchesinkut Lake before, but it was pretty easy to find this view. I entered "Tchesinkut Lake" into Google Earth, which found the lake right away. After that, looking at the outline of the lake made it fairly obvious what angle the picture was taken from. Most of the time was s...

Answer A: In the United States, where would I find how a geological feature got its name?
I can't prove a negative, but I don't think there is any such nation-wide historical record. Finding the history of various names will take different methods. For some, the history and motivations are well known. For example, a number of peaks in the White Mountains of New Hampshire are named af...

It can allow more hunting, depending on local regulations where the wolves are. Another issue is that impact on endangered species is considered in some permitting p...

Answer A: How long after a fire will the majority of the dead trees fall over?
It is impossible to put a number on this. There are way too many variables that effect when a burned tree might fall over: Did it only get burned enough to cook the cambium layer and kill the tree? In that case, the wood is still structurally sound, for now. Did it get well burned and it's ba...

Answer A: Why would hearing muffs be tested against continuous and not impulse noise?
Assuming the ear protector is a linear system, it will attenuate the various frequencies in a pulse the same as it would a steady tone at each frequency. An impulse is by definition short-lived, and contains a wide spectrum of frequencies. Since the attenuation as a function of frequency varies, ...

Answer A: Towing with a Recumbent Trike, Tadpole or Delta?
This isn't a direct answer, but something that should be cleared up. With a trike in general it would seem the end with two wheels is going to have half as much load per tire, with twice as much surface area, as an upright. Yes, each wheel will have half the load. However, the overall area con...

Answer A: What is this small winged bug with a black spot on its back and dusky colored wings
Non-expert guess here, but I think that's some type of robber fly. Those are predatory flys, generally have the shape you show, and are rather large for flys. There are many species. Even experts can disagree on the exact ones. Hopefully the term "robber fly" will lead to more information. The...

Answer A: At what temperature does rain gear become a liability?
A "rule" here is pointless. It matters what you feel like, and what the consequences are of getting the remaining layers wet. Your body will tell you whether it is too hot or too cold at the moment. Generally it is good to follow that by adjusting clothing accordingly. There are some exceptio...

The derailleur can be adjusted just fine with the bike upside down. Flipping the bike doesn't change the side to side alignment of how the chain is fed to the gear set. However, one thing to watch out for is pinching your brake cables. If the brake cables go straight up from the levers on the ha...

I'm not sure about how "right" using SE's community promotion ads against themselves is. I'd like to stick-it to SE too, but this feels morally wrong. However, here's an alternate idea, and what I plan to do. High rep users of a SE site that move here can mention that on their profile. Maybe th...

The dead wood will certainly be dryer than it was when the tree was alive. However, whether it's dry enough is uncertain. Cut it and see. You could offer to cut the tree in return for the wood. Worst case, you store the cordwood under a tarp for a while. You'd probably have to do this anyway. U...
