I don't really mind ID questions, within the right context. If it's something you personally saw, like out of a plane window, it can be a good challenge. Of course you need to tell us what you know about the flight, where you think you were, the direction, etc. I'd also be happy to help with an ol... (more) |

A: At what angle do you hold out your arm at 10 and 15 degrees? The missing context in this quote is apparently that you then use a part of your hand after the arm is extended to guage 10° in the sky. Look where you got that quote from, and it probably mentions the palm, 4 fingers together, or the like. The point is, this gives you a rough guide how far t... (more) |

You apparently already know this was taken in White Salmon WA, so what exactly are you asking? White Salmon can't be that big, and you know you're close to the river looking downstream (west). Go to White Salmon in Google Earth and look around. Or is the point of the question to get us to do this ... (more) |

A: Where's this aurora borealis in Macoun, Saskatchewan? This is aurora borealis, correct? No, that's the Milky Way. Its most of the rest of the galaxy we're in seen edge-on. It looks curved in the picture because a quite wide angle lens was used. (more) |

Whoever downvoted this, please explain what you think is wrong. I looked it over, and as far as I can tell, this is correct. It is agrees with the other answer, which also seems correct. Silent downvotes do this site a disservice. (more) |

A: How commonly can you see Aurora Borealis with the naked eye on Vancouver Island? Vancouver island is fairly large, and extends from about 48°N to 51°N. I wouldn't say that auroras are common at these latitudes, but they will be visible occasionally. A photograph of an aurora from Vancouver island is certainly plausible without any additional information. (more) |

As I said, it can be justified to intervene when the dog is in obvious danger. However, that still doesn't mean it was lost. Most likely, the dog knows how to get home. (more) |

A: Help! I found a lost dog - what do I do next? I found a lost dog Probably not. Nothing in your description suggests the dog was actually lost. If dogs are supposed to be on leash in your particular area, then the dog got out somehow. That doesn't mean it's lost, though. The vast majority of dogs that get out when they aren't supposed to, ... (more) |

Question | — |
What is our position on picture identification with no research? Yesterday a user posted two picture identification questions with no apparent prior research. The same user did this a couple of months ago too. At that time, I spent a few minutes with Google Earth and was easily able to find where a couple of the pictures were taken, so I conclude that even the b... (more) |

"How difficult" is opinion based. What do you expect for answers, "not very", "sorta hard", or "42"? This question would be on topic if it instead asked what the procedure would be, what issues to watch out for, etc. (more) |

A: Where was this image of Wilcox Pass, Alberta taken? Obviously the left image can't be Wilcox Pass, so it was probably taken from Wilcox pass. This was easy to find in Google Earth: "Obviously the left image can't be Wilcox Pass" Why not? Because it's not a pass. There is a slight dip in the ridge at the top center of the picture, but i... A: Where was this image of Tchesinkut Lake taken? I had never heard of Tchesinkut Lake before, but it was pretty easy to find this view. I entered "Tchesinkut Lake" into Google Earth, which found the lake right away. After that, looking at the outline of the lake made it fairly obvious what angle the picture was taken from. Most of the time was s... (more) |

30x from a 6 inch long tube is going to be *very* wobbly. Basically forget about holding it to your eye while free-standing. This will only be useful if you can steady it somehow, like on a rock or against a tree. There is a reason binoculars usually top out at around 7x, maybe up to 10x for heavy... (more) |

Note that shadows are on the left, so the sun is towards the right. The picture was therefore taken looking east. Since it is facing high peaks, that hints this is on the west side of the range. (more) |

Question | — |
What is causing old posts to show up with recent changes? Continuing on with this previous meta post, what is actually going on? The previous post was initially about the policy of bumping old posts to the top of the active list. However, that brought up some questions about what exactly was actually happening. Unfortunately, those involved just ignore... (more) |

So are you saying that you deliberately made a no-change edit? There isn't a bug in the system that somehow thinks there was an edit when there wasn't? (more) |

I wasn't really talking about the one where some answer got deleted. I was specifically referring to recent bumps where there seems to be no content change. The before and after text look identical, yet the system still thinks an edit was made. (more) |
