Downvoting old questions just because they are old needs to stop

+4
−1

It has not gone unnoticed that someone(s) have been downvoting imported questions as soon as they hit the front page regardless of whether they are good or bad questions otherwise.

Question need to voted on by their quality not on whether they were asked/answered before a certain point in time.

Downvoting old questions just because they are old needs to stop

Actually, those old questions need to be deleted altogether. That failing, more people should downvote them.

I have downvoted, and will continue to downvote, old questions that pop to the top for no good reason. These questions are annoying and detrimental to the site.

What makes these old questions popping up worse, and therefore more likely to get downvoted, is that there is no legitimate activity found to explain the bump. In other words, it appears that these questions are getting bumped deliberately. That's really bad. Worse yet, it appear that you are doing the gratuitous bumping.

I say "appears", because it is uncertain why they are really getting bumped. As an ordinary user, I can't see the reason for sure. I want to leave room for those with more ability to explain for sure, and not accuse someone of doing bad things without solid evidence. Once we know what exactly is going on, we should have a community discussion about what should be going on.

I asked a meta question exactly about this, but didn't get an answer. That question wasn't about any policy or accusing anyone of wrongdoing. It was simply fact-finding. The result of that fact-finding might have generated a community discussion on the policy, but that's what meta is for.

I don't think the accusatory tone of the last paragraph is helpful here. I explained in a comment what bumped the post that you asked about. That question linked to a previous meta question, which Charlie answered. I don't see "refusals" here.

@Monica: You explained what bumped one of the posts, but not the rest. That also happened weeks after the question was first asked. Charlie is a mod here, and should be answering such simple questions. The confusion as to what was really going on came from the previous meta question you are referring to. Charlie answered about the policy, but stopped responding when asked what was actually happening. That's what prompted the second meta question.

Olin, can we talk somewhere a little less public than this meta thread?

@Monica: I don't know what you have in mind, but you can send me email. I expect you can get my address from the database.

Monica Cellio‭ wrote almost 4 years ago

@Olin thanks. I'll take that as permission to get your email address (I don't have PII access by default).

@Monica: Yes, go ahead. That's actually an alias, but should get to me. Or, you can use my first name at the embedinc.com domain.
