Question In the United States, where would I find how a geological feature got its name?
In the US, there are plenty of interestingly named features along with lots of really repetitive ones. If I wanted to find out how a mountain/creek/river got its official name, where would I find that information?

Question How far apart should scope rings be on a picatinny rail?
I just got a new hunting rifle, scope, and rings. The rifle has a picatinny rail so I am not limited in ring placement the way I would be with some of the other mounting systems. Is there any advantage in placing the rings farther or closer apart?

Question How would PLA stand up to cold and wet environments?
I am thinking about making some trekking pole baskets with my 3D printer in PLA, the originals having been worn out a long time ago. PLA has problems with heat, how does it do with cold? They won't cost very much but if they break right away it might be a problem.

Question What difference is removing wolves from the list of animals protected by the Endangered Species Act in the US going to make?
Wolves are going to be removed from the list of animals protected by the Endangered Species Act (pending litigation). They were already delisted in Montana and Idaho and had a hunting season in Wyoming. What difference will this make assuming that it goes through?

Question How long after a fire will the majority of the dead trees fall over?
There are several higher altitude forested areas that I go hiking that have burned this summer and I am wondering about how they will be next summer. Dead trees falling on you is always a concern when camping and there will be lots more in those areas once the fire is out. How long on average w...

Comment Post #278684 Are you saying its unsuitable or that PETG/ABS/Nylon would be better? Most of the current development of 3d printed firearms is done in PLA or PLA+ and lasts 1,000 plus rounds

With theis KML circular generator, and this STL generator it is possible to create round 3D printed maps like this one. Image alt text However, the KML circle isn't perfectly round and that leeds to the bumps on the edges you can see. Is there a program where I can trim the original STL so t...

Question Is PLA suitable for outdoor gear use in the sun?
I have a 3d printer, and right now I am only using PLA which has a relatively low melting temperature (hot car in the sun or dishwasher would be enough to warp it). I am interested in printing some gear parts like trekking pole baskets or contoured maps or scope covers, is PLA going to warp from j...

Answer A: Where can I find the data to turn topographical maps into STL files?
There are two free sites I have found. 1. https://touchterrain.geol.iastate.edu/ Easy to use, will cut the box into tiles if you want to do the print in sections, lets you set how big your print bed is. 2. http://jthatch.com/Terrain2STL/ Simpler, with less settings but definately not as nice to...

Question Why would hearing muffs be tested against continuous and not impulse noise?
Looking at a new pair of earmuffs that a NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) or 34 DB. However the fine print says that said rating is for continous noise and not impulse (like gunfire). Why would they be tested that way as a big reason people buy earmuffs is to protect their hearing while shooting?

Answer A: Is it safe to use a slightly rusty butane canister?
So long as it's still holding butane and not deeply pitted you should be fine. I would assume that if it was already cracked through the butane would have already escaped. They don't seem to be real expensive, so it might not be a bad idea to just get a new one and not worry about it.
