I keep seeing trail runners who instead of a small light backpack, have a running vest with small front pockets and then one on the back.
What is the advantage of a running vest over a small backpack for trail running?

A backpack bounces around too much when running. You need something tight-fitting and light. A vest with a few pockets is a lot better at that than a pack.
