What is the advantage of a running vest instead of a backpack for trail running?

I keep seeing trail runners who instead of a small light backpack, have a running vest with small front pockets and then one on the back.

What is the advantage of a running vest over a small backpack for trail running?

A backpack bounces around too much when running. You need something tight-fitting and light. A vest with a few pockets is a lot better at that than a pack.

Balance...

A vest for a limited amount of stuff, is a quick easy replacement for Combining a Frontpack with a Backpack while hiking

Ease of access. You can get something out of most pockets in a vest without stopping and removing it first. With a backpack, you might be able to reach a side pocket without removing it - otherwise anything you want from it requires removal to access it.

Trail runners often prefer running vests over small backpacks for several reasons. Running vests offer better weight distribution, keeping the load closer to the body and reducing bouncing during fast movements. The multiple small front pockets provide easy access to essentials like water, snacks, and navigation devices without the need to stop or remove the vest. Additionally, the back pocket allows for storage of larger items like extra layers or a hydration bladder, maintaining a streamlined and aerodynamic profile for optimal performance on the trails.
