Question What are some good games or activities to do on a hike?
A few friends and I regularly play board games and RPGs together. We are planning a casual hiking and camping trip. We will go by car to the trailhead and hike in with our gear, tent camp overnight, stay one day, and hike out the third day. Part of our plan is to avoid technology during our hike and ...

Comment Post #284324 Thank you! We took the dog to the local vet and she was microchipped. They are attempting to contact her owner. We also reached out to our apartment community and they helped us put up fliers and are reaching out to our nearby apartments and HOAs to spread the word. I've posted on Facebook and Ne...

Comment Post #284328 Did you read my post? I said the dog was running across the road and was almost hit by a car. If I lived somewhere rural where a roaming dog would probably be okay that would be one thing, but I live in an apartment next to a busy highway. I see dead pets along the roadside almost every day. You are ...

Question Help! I found a lost dog - what do I do next?
I was working today when I saw a small dog run across the road in front of my apartment, narrowly being missed by a car. I went out and lured the dog in with a hotdog, brought her to my apartment, and gave her some water. She is groomed and has trimmed nails, so she's clearly someone's pet. What ...

Answer A: 2021 - February - Rain Storms
This photo was taken on the evening of October 10th, 2018 in Atlanta. It was remarkably clear and everything visible was reflecting the streaks of falling water.

Question Is it safe to use a slightly rusty butane canister?
I was sorting some old camping equipment at my parents' house and found several butane canisters for a camp stove. One of them has some rust on the metal around the shoulders; it's slightly pitted but seems structurally sound. The plastic cap was on so the connection area is pristine. Is it safe to u...

Answer A: Adjusting derailleur with bike upside down, is it ok?
Yes, turning the bike upside down is the best way to adjust the derailleur without a bike stand. It puts the derailleur closer to you and keeps both wheels and pedals free of the ground. The only situation where this method would be problematic is in strong winds with the potential to knock the bike ...

That is almost certainly some variety of wintergreen, likely alpine wintergreen (Gaultheria humifusa). See for photos.

Comment Post #74891 On the other hand, I also worked with a former "trail ride" horse who would get a saddle jerked on in the morning and wear it all day. It took three weeks before he calmed down enough to let a saddle blanket sit on his back while I groomed him. Amusingly, he had no issues being ridden bareback, but h...

Comment Post #74891 Often the why is important to determine the best way to respond. Unfortunately it's usually because people let them get away with it. I worked with one pony who came to the rescue because it had severely bitten a child's shoulder. Turns out the parents had been hand feeding and letting it get away wi...

Answer A: How do you train a horse that bites humans not to?
I worked in high school with rescue horses, some VERY mouthy ones among them. There were two main issues: some had been hand fed treats and would nip in expectation of a tasty snack. The others were, as your question indicates, biting for dominance or because of other behavioral issues (e.g. when bei...

Comment Post #74786 Additionally this could cause an issue of the adjusting buckles coming unthreaded because there is no stop loop at the end of the strap, but that depends on the size / tightness of the buckle relative to the webbing, so maybe not an issue.

Comment Post #74786 I wonder where the line is for that on the coarseness of the webbing. I've done a lot of sewing with an ordinary machine on straps and can only think of two cases where I broke a needle, both where I was working with several layers of heavy fabric along with the webbing. I'd be concerned that continu...

Answer A: How to cut and seal backpack straps?
I assume you mean the nylon webbing straps. There are a couple good ways to do this! I recommend a practice run or two with the unwanted end so you have a good idea what you're doing. Also, make sure any buckles and snaps are above where you wish to cut. Orienting and rethreading these is not fun. ...

Comment Post #74772 I'm in Atlanta, GA. We have a fair number of urban trails, but at the moment a lot of them are overpopulated - our mayor is getting a lot of calls to close the Beltline because people are worried that it will actually concentrate the spread of the virus.

Question What are some good ways to go outdoors in a city while safely social distancing?
I live in a downtown urban center. Normally I exercise by going to the gym or by taking long walks around the different neighborhoods or some local hiking trails in parks. Current social distancing guidelines to reduce coronavirus transmission state that individuals should stay at least six feet a...
