Answer A: It seems odd to have both "bikes" and "biking" as top-level tags
Biking currently has 26 posts and bikes has 17. Neither has a tag description. The latter is newer. This answer suggests merging them and no one's objected in the four months since it was posted. If we merge, which tag do y'all want to survive? Clicking the buttons is easy, but I don't want to...

Question Should posting on Meta affect reputation?
When we launched this community, we did not yet have the ability to set different reputation grants for different categories. We've had this for a while but we failed to follow up before now, sorry. Do you want us to change posts on Meta to not award rep for upvotes or subtract it for downvotes? ...

Question Where do bald eagles go at night if not in their own nests?
I've recently learned of a local eagle cam and have been enjoying watching a pair of bald eagles and their three chicks. While I don't have access to many days of video to check (the site buffers 12 hours), I have noticed a pattern the past few nights that I'm curious about. Throughout the night ...

Answer A: What is our position on picture identification with no research?
I'm separating this for voting purposes (since the other answer already has votes). In another answer I proposed some options for dealing with picture-identification questions. The "mildest" of these options, in terms of disruption to the community, is: > 3. Decide they are ok in limited numbe...

Question How can we grow this community?
Codidact's communities have a lot of great content that is helping people on the Internet. Our communities are small, though, and sustainable communities depend on having lots of active, engaged participants. The folks already here are doing good work; our challenge is to find more people like you ...

Answer A: What are some good games or activities to do on a hike?
I've been seeing more "pocket games" in recent years. Some are designed to be both small and short (play in the time it takes for your food to arrive at a restaurant, for example); others are a little longer. Board Game Geek has a user-curated list of pocket games; some of them won't meet your need...

Answer A: What is our position on picture identification with no research?
I don't think "where was this picture taken?" questions are generally helpful to the community.[^1] There are places out there that do "view from my window" type contests where players use information in the photo to try to nail down where it is, but those are challenges posted by someone who knows ...

Answer A: What is causing old posts to show up with recent changes?
For the question linked on 2021-01-06, the change was a deleted (spam) answer. Unfortunately, if you can't see deleted answers you can't tell that's what happened, so I understand how that was confusing. (We do want to improve how changes are reported on the question list, instead of everything jus...

Answer A: 2021 - January - Snow
Same storm as this answer. I was struck by how the snow piles formed on the tree branches. snow "webbing" among branches

Answer A: 2021 - January - Snow
In February 2010 in Pittsburgh, PA, a storm dropped 26 inches on us overnight. I do not understand the physics of how this snow along the top of a fence did that, but it stayed that way for more than a week.

Answer A: 2020 - October - Fall Colors
Aftermath More below than above, at this point. (What you can't tell from the picture is that we've already raked a couple times.) Pittsburgh, 2020-10-30.

Answer A: What is the best method for storing a 'pre-mixed baking mix' in a camper for long periods?
Your question asked about opened packages. I'm going to offer a bit of a frame challenge. Don't store opened packages long-term in your trailer; rotate them into your kitchen and use them, and buy another unopened package for the trailer. If you're asking about long-term storage then it sounds l...

Answer A: 2020 - July - Fish
One more even though I'm late. I took this picture at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago in September 2019 using a ZTE Axon 7 cell phone.

Answer A: 2020 - July - Fish
Oops, I forgot about this, so even though it's now August I'll share. I took this picture at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium in October 2015 using my then-current cell phone.

Answer A: Planted cherry tomatoes too close together; can I still recover?
I saw the advice here to kill the smaller plant, and elsewhere I saw the suggestion that I could transplant if I were careful. I decided to try that three days after posting this question. They both survived and yesterday I saw fruit forming on both for the first time. I took this picture today. ...

Question Advertise Outdoors on The Great Outdoors?
Stack Exchange sites that are not beta support community-curated ads. The Great Outdoors is one such site, and obviously there's some support on meta there for this community, so have y'all considered running an ad for Outdoors Codidact on The Great Outdoors SE? You wouldn't be the first Codidact c...

Question Planted cherry tomatoes too close together; can I still recover?
Two weeks ago I planted two small cherry-tomato seedlings ("tidy treats" variety; the description used words like "small" and "compact") into one 10" pot. I now know that's too close; I'm a beginner. My question is about recovering from this mistake now, two weeks later. Is it still practical to t...

Question How should I support a droopy basil seedling?
Last year one of my CSA boxes contained a basil seedling in a 4" starter pot. I'd never grown herbs before, but I transplanted it to a pot, took care of it, and had a tasty bounty all summer. This year I ordered a couple seedlings from the same farm that had supplied the CSA. They arrived two da...

Question Are gardening questions on-topic?
Are questions about gardening on-topic on this site? It's "outdoors", but not the kinds of outdoor activity that most questions seem to be about. I know that over on SE there's another site for gardening, but I wasn't active on either that site or The Great Outdoors over there. Now, however, I'm h...

Answer A: 2020 - May - Birds
In the spring of 2018 I was surprised to see a nest in the joint of a support beam on my back porch. I come and go through that door every day; I would have figured it would be too high-traffic. But there was a nest, and then there was a bird occupying it nearly full-time -- a bird who got angry an...

Question How do I protect necessary glasses while kayaking or rafting?
My team at work has occasional outings and one of the activities we've talked about for the future is kayaking or whitewater rafting. I've never done either and am also dependent on expensive prescription glasses. (I can't wear contacts and can't see well enough to do anything but ride along withou...
