A: Do "R" values add proportionally? Yes, the R-value will add of your different layers. If you wear layer A with R=5 and layer B with R=2.5, the overall insulation value will be R=7.5. To explain this a bit, we think of two layers or flat walls which interact only due to thermal conduction. This is just a model and in reality other ... (more) |

Gloves for alpine tours in summer I own Haglöfs Grepp Glove which are quite thin but have a Windstopper membrane. I like those gloves because they offer great grip. But I am also a bit confused because I got really cold fingers on my bicycle during the winter with approx. 30 km/h speed. It wasn't that cold (0°C/32°F) s... (more) |

A: Color vision deficiency a dead end for mountaineering career, as an athlete? I don't know whether e.g. mountain guides for expeditions are accepted if they have color vision deficiency. But as a participant I don't think this is a no-go criteria. There were guys with asthma and other serious medical limitations going on 8000+ and Mark Inglis made it on the Everest with two ar... A: Hardshell vs. Softshell jackets While reading the answers to this question I had to disagree at some points. For example referring to @DavidR I don't think that Softshells are generally less windproof than Hardshells. Over the last years it seems that the manufacturers are mainly producing Softshell with Gore-Tex Windstopper membra... (more) |

Hardshell vs. Softshell jackets Nowadays not only outdoor enthusiasts hear those terms when they are searching a jacket which fits their requirements most. Literally everywhere in cities you can find jackets (often with membranes) that can be grouped into Hardshells and Softshells. But what are the major differences in terms of: ... (more) |

Improving sport climbing skills I recently made a sport climbing course mainly to give it a try and also to learn something about belaying in general. It's fun, challenging and I got hooked quite a bit. Overall I was around 10 times in the climbing gym yet. I want to get better of course. I am 1,84m and thin, indeed my arms/hands/... (more) |

Are dark or bright clothings preferable in the desert? Natives from regions which are really hot and have a high sun intensity are wearing sometimes white/bright and sometimes black/dark colors. I mean there has to be a better strategy in terms of heat budget and radiation protection (which seem to be the two main enemies). Black absorbs the heat mo... (more) |

A: How to assure safe searching for cache hidden in my own backyard? I like the question although I am not a geocacher at all. If I want to allow strangers to enter my garden I have to give some kind of permission I guess. I understand that you don't want to make a sign "open access for geocacher". That could confuse others and for the geocachers it's a simple object... (more) |

How to begin in alpine tours I know it's probably too risky to make alpine tours alone, especially when you go over glaciers. I joined DAV to be insured while in the mountains and to be able to use the offerings like courses and guided tours. But they are quite expensive, I can't and don't want to do this every month. I also re... (more) |

A: Is playing musical instruments like Harp/Harmonica, Flute unsafe during backpacking trips? Friends of mine were going for a trip to Canada. They told me that walking the woods they were singing/whistling/clapping most of the time. The main issue is alarming bears abruptly which can cause them to attack. I guess this is true for other wild animals too. I made a quick google search to verif... (more) |

A: Are headaches a bad sign at altitude? If it's a nice summer's day at lowest avalanche warning level in mid altitude you can still be hit by an avalanche and die. That being said in reference to the answer of @BenCrowell and the comments, it's just a matter of chances which are relatively low to get AMS (which are effecting your body in a... (more) |

A: Can Primaloft One be Layered? In my opinion two layers with say 60g/m² and 100g/m² are better than one with 160g/m². The different distribution of isolation is a point but I don't think this is relevant. You can get jackets with all kinds of stuffed torsos/arms/backs/arm-pits in lots thicknesses. The big advantag... (more) |
