How does powdered peanut butter compare to regular peanut butter for backpacking?

I have heard of people using powdered instead of regular peanut butter for backpacking, mostly on the theory that it is lighter.

How does powdered peanut butter compare to regular peanut butter?

I have a standard 2 1/2 lb jar of peanut butter and I have one same size container of PB2 powdered peanut butter.

  • Bulk
    • Powdered Peanut Butter takes 3 times as much space as regular for the same amount of calories.
  • Weight
    • Powdered Peanut Butter
      • 131 Calories per Ounce
      • 4.6 Calories per Gram
    • Regular Peanut Butter
      • 158 Calories per Ounce
      • 5.5 Calories per Gram

So from a weight or size perspective, regular peanut butter is much more efficient. Powdered peanut butter also has much less fat, which is probably why it has fewer calories per oz.
