What do the 'delete' and 'close' options I see under a question do?

What do the 'delete' and 'close' options I see under a question do?

I am a normal user with ~1700 rep.

I see a delete button under questions and answers (if I wrote them or not). When I mouse over it turns red and gets bigger.

I see a close button under questions and answers (if I wrote them or not). When I mouse over it stays grey but gets bigger.

What happens if I click one? Are these voting buttons or will clicking them complete the action even if I am not a moderator?

While those buttons are currently shown to users, who do not have the ability to perform the action, yet, this is going to change soon, once we roll out Abilities (formerly known as Trust Levels). Stay excited for an update on Meta Codidact for that. :D

These are the behavior rules for the currently existing and soon to be deprecated reputation system:

If you have less than 250 rep and click any of this buttons, nothing will happen (maybe an error message will be shown), unless you have super powers (mod powers).

If you have more than 250 rep and click the "Close" button, you will be shown a dialog asking you for close reasons. You may select one and then click the "Close this post" button, which should do what it is labeled.

If you have more than 1000 rep and click the "Delete" button, the post will be deleted (but only soft-deleted, so it can be undeleted at any time by the same people choosing "Restore").

In the future, we'll switch to a voting-based mechanism, where moderators really have a "binding vote", but for the time being, everyone has one. Don't get used to it too much, though, as we'll likely take it away from you in some time. ;)

As of right now, nothing. It has been requested that they not show if a person can't use them, but I am not sure where that is on the list of priorities for development.
