Answer A: Other than good shoes and a stick, what are some ways to preserve your knees on long hikes?
3 things have helped me and my knees alot. Preparation. Don't go from doing nothing and then 3 days in the mountains. Take smaller trips, maybe biking a bit or go "rucking" (twice regular backpack load, but go slow and on steady ground) and combine with... ...Physical balance exercises with weights...

Answer A: How to remove butter stain from raincoat?
Clothes washing detergents are not good for greasy stains. This also applies to regular clothes : Smear the area with copious amounts of dishwasher detergent then wash normally. This is going to remove any solvent based hydrophobe so you'll have to reapply as if it has none.

Answer A: How to win against ants
Salt is the answer. A continuous line of fine salt around your tent and campsite. Ants don't like crossing it. You have now angered the ant God so you have to do an appeasement offering. Smear the base of a tree outside your perimeter with strawberry jam or any other sweet and delicious gel. Put a he...

Answer A: Hot coffee brewing solutions for deep woods camping
I recommend either making camp coffee (or cowboy coffee I see it referred to) or bringing an aeropress. They are light, probably around 200 grams and easy to clean and operate. Grind the coffee in advance and store in single serve zip lock bags.

Answer A: Looking for a simple gps tracker with long battery life
The Garmin etrex series have what you need. It has long battery life (24+) active tracking and what's better you get them accepting AA batteries so you can bring spares. If you set down the tracker timer to once every minute and switch it off when you are immobile it 'll last even longer. The screen ...

Answer A: How do you refill your alcohol stove while it's burning?
This is dangerous And the most dangerous thing about it - is that it gives the appearance of not being dangerous. Don't refill a lit alcohol stove without being aware that it could become a fireball that will consume your facial hair, your tent, your skin, your travel mates and/or your/their visual ...

Answer A: Given limited space and weight what should I carry to get a fire going with damp wood?
A lot has been covered already, I'll add the thing I find most of use. Knowledge about flora and geography where you hike. Someone answered "Skills" which is fundament, of course - but they won't help you if you do not know the vegetation types around where you hike. Where I hike (Norway) I know wh...

Answer A: How should I dress for sweat inducing activities in cold weather?
Wool. That is as simple as it is. Inner layer needs to be thin and light, but still wool. Merino wool is common. It breathes like nothing else, keeps you warm, and doesn't absorb water. It'll get wet, but it won't get wet as cotton does. Add layers to comfort - add windshell / rainshell if circumst...

Answer A: Neoprene as a base layer for winter activities?
Neoprene is not a good idea - unless circumstances dictate it necessary. It doesn't breathe well, it has a tendency to gnaw. It has a relatively high friction towards other textiles, so you'll have to work harder to move. And it doesn't isolate as well as alternatives, though it has some isolating p...

Answer A: What is the easiest way to remove creosote from pots and pans?
Unless the black stains bother you for visual reasons, let them be. Wash the pan off with normal dishwashing methods. This will take care of the stickyness and most contamination from pan to clothes/fingers etc and having a black layer on your pan does not harm its performance. In fact, where I am fr...

Answer A: Are there any natural materials found in the wild that can be used as an effective sunscreen?
Most white substances are usually good. As a bush assumption you can assume that reflectance in visible range means reflectance in UV range. You can grind rock against rock and mix with spit or water. The active components of sunblock are usually pretty common minerals. Rutile, Zinc oxides etc. The o...

Answer A: Where can I find the current status regarding fire bans in Norway?
I was about to write a long essay on how strange the Norwegian rules regarding rights-of-every-man and the department of safety and readiness but I realized you are just asking where to find the information. This is usually not a judgement that is made at the nation level - it is made by each munici...

Answer A: How much difference does wind chill make if you are inside a snow cave?
None, which is why having one is nice for survival. Wind chill comes from wind over exposed skin, unless your snow cave is badly built - there will be no wind. Do note that wind chill is also a non applicable factor if you are not exposing skin. Wind chill is calculated / modeled directly from tes...

Answer A: Can ocean/saltwater fishing gear be used for freshwater/lake fishing?
It will be fine. There is no issue going from salt to fresh. Usually saltwater gear includes lines and tackles that are supposed to catch bigger fish deeper in the ocean so you should probably try the smallest lures. The line will be quite visible but if you are inexperienced it will not be much of a...

Answer A: How many miles should one expect to get out of a good pair of hiking boots?
This is wildly dependent on your gait, the terrain the temperature and climate in which you hike, your ability and rigor at cleaning and taking care of the shoes. There will likely be some brands that will last longer on your feet, but that is not necessarily only the price range that determines thi...

Answer A: How to deal with keeping a first aid kit inside a hot car?
There are good answers regarding where to put it and how to best protect it. I'll add a few insights to those excellent answers. Separate the insensitive stuff from the sensitive stuff. Bandaids, compresses, burn-gel, dest. water, antiseptic, some NSAIDs - these things usually withstand heat well. ...

Answer A: Foraging food in Kungsleden/Kebnekaise/Sarek (SWE) region in summer
Not nearly enough - don't rely on it. You might find blueberries in the parts of the trail that is below approx. 200m above sea level and certainly you will come upon patches of ripe cloudberries as high as perhaps 600m hillsides facing south but that will not be enough to sustain you. There are some...

Answer A: Is it safe to take a shower outside during a thunderstorm?
I'd say slightly dangerous, and probably more dangerous than other locations. You wish to avoid two things in thunderstorms. Places that are higher than the local area (50m-ish area) and "electrical earth". A shower is a superb electrical earth, metal structure, with a better connection to "earth" ...

Answer A: How do I strengthen my ankles for long, steepish, snow and glacier routes?
Go jogging. Not on asphalt or paved roads, go "off-piste". Woodland trails are great. If you are able to, choose low shoes with low to moderate damping. Then run. Jogging over uneven ground is what I do to keep my feet strong. After years of playing handball I had trouble with my ankles, but running...
