Answer A: Tarp ridgeline attachment: over, under or from the edges?
I am not a camper, so I do not know The Answer™, but here are some considerations: Draped over the cord Pros - It's simple. - If the ground is higher on one side, you can give one side or the other side more fabric. Cons - Most likely for the fabric to slide around in a way you hadn't...

Question How should I prepare for and react to unleashed dogs when hiking with young children?
I take my young children (0-7 years) outside to local trails. It's not remote, virgin wilderness, just a few dozen hectares of forest and stream. The kids enjoy it, and the youngest one is still learning to move on uneven surfaces. They are interested in dogs, but from at least 2 meters away (and pre...

Answer A: What are some simple tasks to teach knife safety?
Following the footsteps of user5732's post with the Cub Scout check list, their handbook has some suggestions of projects. One that hasn't been mentioned yet is soap carving. Soap is easier to cut through than wood, it's cheap, and it's readily available. The handbook has a template for carving a ...

Comment Post #55687 _"Train your dogs to ignore strangers and stick close to you when passing others unless you tell them it's okay to say hello."_ If your dogs can't follow this (and I don't just mean "_aspire_ to follow this"), then keep them on a leash. Making sure my kids don't get hurt on the trail by a bobcat or a...

Answer A: What are some good games or activities to do on a hike?
Bring Don't Get Got, which has a very small in-play size. Play it as a meta-game over the whole course of the trip. It even works in the vehicles to and from your trip. Or if that game turns your group into a paranoid wreck, make a team scavenger hunt, either honor-system or photo.
