Answer A: This isn't a double overhand loop -- what is it?
It's the same shape as Ashley's "Knotted Strap Hitch", #1696 page 294. That hitch is intended to be tied with both loops around the hitched object and with both ends loaded, not as a two-loop loop knot with a running end and a standing end. As a loop knot, it wouldn't be named a "hitch" even if it ...

Answer A: Searching and reading back issues of Climbing and Rock and Ice
There are indeed libraries which have print or microfilm copies of those publications. San Francisco Public Library has a Periodicals floor where they can be accessed. They appear to have issues since 1995 (Climbing magazine) and 1998 (Rock and Ice magazine). There are services which provide online ...

Answer A: Does 'Single-oar sculling' have any use in recreational boating?
I know of a sailboat owner/restorer who has made a point of installing yuloh fittings and uses the yuloh (specialized oar for sculling) preferentially over the outboard motor when possible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diMB6Ix9jTQ She's a sailmaker by trade, but her use of her Nordic Folkboat de...

Answer A: Self inflatable mats: the more air, the more comfortable?
An underinflated mat means you're on the ground. A firm (enough)a mat means you're not. The greater air doesn't make the mat softer, it makes the sensation of the ground under the mat softer.

Answer A: When a sailing ship is pursuing another upwind, why does the distance gained to windward matter so much?
Windward progress is so valuable in a tactical situation like a warship chase because the windward position is the more maneuverable one. If you can overcome your quarry's distance-made-good-to-windward, you can completely overcome any evasions they may attempt. This is a different situation than no...

Answer A: Does warming an enclosed area with an open flame provide help with drying wet fabric?
I'd have to say No, not based on the water vapor in the exhaust from the candle, but based on the fact that if the area is enclosed and not very large, you can only dry a very small amount of wet fabric no matter whether you're using a heat source or not. Unless you have a way to dehumidify the area ...

Answer A: Are there human powered generators that draw power from body movement?
The U.S. Army had a power-generating backpack developed, within which were ballast weights which moved with the wearer's marching motion, and which were coupled to some sort of generator. It looks like this item has been commercialized now: http://www.lightningpacks.com/lightningpacks.com/Electrici...

Answer A: How can I prevent this canvas swag from sagging in the middle?
The main thing is that the outer guy-line needs to pull in a direction which pulls the top of the hoop outward effectively. Extending the guy-line in the picture farther away from the tent and closer to a horizontal angle is not an effective way to get more outward pull at the top of the hoop, surpri...

Answer A: Does "Sport Climbing" refer to bolted climbing outdoors only or both indoors and outdoors
The expression "sport climbing" was created to contrast against "traditional" climbing. The difference at that time was that sport climbs didn't demand very much effort spent arranging, fixing and cleaning anchors and belays, whereas traditional climbing required one to arrange all of one's own hardw...

Answer A: How is a backpack supposed to fit on the shoulder?
You'll notice that the shoulder straps are adjustable by pulling webbing/strap through the locking slider on the front of the bottom of the padded part of the strap. It's not very likely that there is no range at which the pack will fit you. The fact that the picture shows the strap lifting up off t...
