Question Which is more dangerous, icy roads or icy roads with snow on top?
Where I live, we are about to get a bunch of snow (5”-8”). This has brought about the question of which is more dangerous an icy road or an icy road with snow? Does the snow help traction on the ice, or does it make it worse?

Answer A: How warm should a down jacket be in a layering system?
The answer really depends on how long you plan to be standing still. If you plan to be standing still for extended periods of time, say 10 or more minutes, I would suggest a warmer coat. If you're only going to be standing still for shorter periods I would suggest a lighter down jacket. It is import...

Answer A: Keeping water from freezing while cross country skiing
If you bring a smaller water bottle it will fit into something like this which you can wear under your coat so your body heat will keep it warm. Some downsides are that it is slightly less comfortable than putting the bottle in your backpack, and you can’t carry a lot of water.

I would suggest a pair of good waterproof winter gloves instead of mittens. These will keep your hands warm and protected from wind and still allow for enough dexterity for writing with a pencil.

Question Hammock sleeping
I love camping and backpacking and have always wondered if it would be better to use a hammock instead of a tent. I want to know if a hammock is a viable replacement for a tent if you don’t care how many people you can fit. If it is better for hammock camping what are the things to consider...

Some friends and I were thinking of doing a one day hike somewhere in Minnesota. I have looked online for places but nothing I have found really gives me a sense of the place. My requirements are that it needs to be within an hour or two of Minneapolis but that time is a little flexible, is a six t...

Question Where does lightning strike
There was recently a storm near me. T was a lightning storm and I was wondering if it really is true about it only hitting tall things or if it is really just an old wives tale. If it is true why is it that way.

Question Philmont closed - any good places to go instead?
I was planning on a trip to Philmont Scout Ranch this August but it closed the back country for the rest of the summer. My troop already has group tickets on a flight to Colorado with Delta. I was just wondering if anyone would know a good place to go in that area, that would be a passable replaceme...

Question Would it make sense to backpack with an 8 lb tent at Philmont Scout Ranch?
I am going to Philmont Scout Ranch in the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico, USA, this August. I am planning on using the Eureka Timberline 4 tent, which weighs about 8 pounds. I am doing a 7 day trek and would like to know if this would make sense.
