Answer A: Hot coffee brewing solutions for deep woods camping
Indonesian "mud" coffee works fine. If coffee beans are ground sufficiently fine, you can just put some together with near-boiling water, stir a bit, wait 3-5 minutes and all of the grounds will sink to the bottom. They really do, if the coffee is ground sufficiently fine. You just need a cup and ...

Answer A: How to melt snow without fire or body heat?
Possibly not-crazy idea in certain cases If there is ice available somewhere, perhaps your tarp/bowl resulted in a convex lens-shaped extra bit of water, or you can (somehow) locate a frozen pond or even deep puddle from a previous thaw, you can consider the possibility of making an ice lens and usi...

Question How did O’Brady charge his electronic gear while hiking across Antarctica?
The Outside Online article How to Fuel for a Solo, Unassisted Antarctic Crossing starts with "Colin O’Brady thinks it’s possible—but just barely—to haul enough calories to traverse the continent. A significant fraction of all compasses are used where the magnetic dip is quite large. Where I grew up it was way over 60 ...

Deaths from the "brain eating amoeba" Naegleria fowleri are fairly rare but each is highlighted in the press, as headlines containing brain eating beget clicks. While it's not yet understood why this fresh water amoeba is a pathogen and ends up in the brain specifically; molecules in neurons may be ...

Question Ways to desalinate water when "lost at sea"?
In recent news reports that all seem to be saying the same things: Jakarta Post Indonesian teenager survives 49 days adrift in Guam waters NPR: 19-Year-Old Survives 49 Days At Sea After Floating Hut Drifts To Guam The Guardian Indonesian teenager survives 49 days adrift at sea in fishing hut T...

Question Has extended exposure to sunlight and UV in the arctic or antarctic ever caused someone's eyes to change color?
In Biology SE I have just asked Could being exposed to excess UV in the arctic lead to a human eye color change? If so, what is the mechanism? but comments there questioned weather Arctic hiker Robert Swan's eyes did actually change color due to exposure to UV. Even 32 years ago people spending all ...
