Question Are there any ski touring routes in the Austrian\Swiss Alps suitable for kids?
I would like to go for a week on skialp tour with kids (3 adults, 3 kids 8 years old) this winter (end of December to January). Answer A: How can I prepare my body for a relatively hard hike?
The question here is not if you will be able to climb the mount or not. You will climb it for sure. The question is how comfortable the climbing will be? Will you be able to see a beauty of the mountains or during your climb you will be suffering and sweating? Good indication that you are ready and ...

Answer A: First time snow hiking
I'll start answering from last question: It's hard to say if it's safe to hike alone. Most people will say No. I believe that in Alps rescue will come in 10-20 min if you are able to call for a help. The thing is it would be very stressful for you. This year me and my friend found a girl in Switzer...

Answer A: What are the possible risks of exercising at high altitudes?
Exercises actively affects the viscosity of the blood. High altitude and exercises affects amount of hematocrit in the blood. This increases the load on the heart and causes blood flow disorders. I saw people vomiting on 4500 and I saw people died on 5500m from heart attack and they were not doing a...

Answer A: Are AT skis unsuited for downhill skiing at a resort?
I use both AT skis and downhill skis. I have different bindings for AT skis (dynafit TLT and Marker where boots connected to the frame). I'm not good at skiing, so for me there is no difference which bindings to use for downhill skiing. Both work just fine. The problem is in skis and boots (not bin...

Answer A: Is it really a good workout to go to work by bike every day?
Yes it's very good workout to go by bike every day. It's anyway better then going almost the same time by public transport. I'm not an expert but you need more time to recover when you increase a load. If you go every day the same route then you have constant load. First few weeks it will be diffic...

Question How can I safely climb a glacial route with just a kid or one other person?
I want to climb a mountain with my daughter. There is a glacier on the route that we should cross. Other routes take much longer or are technically more difficult. The glacier does not have many crevasses but they are deep and may be hidden. All people have glacier equipment: crampons, ice axes, ro...

Answer A: Quick and easy winter shelter for kids to build
The answer from @Nate Wengert, far away from reality. I don't think that kid will be able to dig snow cave or build a shelter even having hatchet and shovel. It might be easy when you do it in good sunny weather on your backyard. Try to do it at night when you got lost, when you have frozen hands and...

Answer A: How best to condition oneself to do day hikes at an altitude peaking at 6,000 to 8,000 ft?
Older people better tolerate high altitude. For that altitude you don't need to do any special trainings\preparation. It would be enough to do any sport activity like running swimming or bicycle. The more sports you do the more comfortable you will be during your hike.

Answer A: Do regular lighters not work at high altitude?
I think it does not matter which lighter you use if it's filled with butane. Lighter would not work if gas temperature close to boiling temperature. For butane it's -1C. For isobutane it's -11C and for propane it's -42C. Also propane has better evaporation properties. That's why gas stoves filled wit...
