Answer A: Alternatives to retreating quickly when caught in a lightning storm when rock climbing?
I am by no means an authority on lightning in any way. With that said, however, I have had my share of getting caught climbing in a thunderstorm, and have since tried to do some reading on the subject. The biggest hurdle to surmount here is that most lightning safety advice revolves around seeking sh...

Answer A: What are the suitable choices of crampons for Scarpa Charmoz GTX Women boots?
Looks like you'll need Newmatic crampons. The Charmoz GTX has a heel bail but no toe bail, which means you will need a strap over the toe. Many crampons today come with a choice of configuration between a step-in or toe-strap, and most step-ins can be refitted with a toe-strap after the fact as well....

Answer A: Which layer should have a hood (for rainy conditions)?
My hard shell and puffy down shell both have hoods, but they are the only layers of mine that do. I rarely wear the down shell while in motion, unless it's extremely cold (below -15C), which basically just leaves the waterproof hard shell. To adjust for warmth in the gap between 0 and -15C I just us...

Answer A: Comfy inflatable pillows for car camping
I picked up a memory foam travel pillow for around $5 at Canadian Tire a few years back. It actually packs small enough (about the size of a 1L Nalgene) that I also use it on easier multiday mountaineering trips where I'm not already trying to shave as much weight off of my pack as possible (otherwis...

Answer A: What to teach someone who wants to start lead climbing?
WARNING: Climbing is considered a dangerous activity. No written material can substitute proper teaching. The following is a just a list of topics, but you should seek a professional instructor. There are quite a few important things, assuming you mean sport-leading (trad climbing involves more): ...

Answer A: Rapid backpack readying
It takes me about 40 minutes to pack for an overnight or longer trip, and this includes making and packing sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. The biggest advantage is that I know exactly what I need, where it is, and how to place it in the pack. This is mainly the result of going on hikes nearly ev...

Answer A: Bear spray vs. rifles against polar bears?
US Fisheries and Wildlife (with black and grizzly bears) suggests that bear spray is statistically more effective. A 2008 study by Smith et al included two polar bear encounters where the bears were successfully deterred with bear spray. However, in polar bear country you have other considerations,...

Answer A: What's the name of the old cross country ski boots with three holes at the front?
I think those were the original 3-pin Nordic Norm bindings. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skibinding#Crosscountry: 75 mm (Rottefella, Nordic Norm, 3-pin) This is the original, classic system found on cross country skis, invented by Bror With. These bindings, once the standard, are no longer ...

Answer A: Practicality of Beards
Recently a friend and I have began experimenting with the use of our beards as moisture traps while skiing and hiking in snow storms. The general idea is that the skin temperature is warm enough to melt the deepest layer of ice/snow/frost, and one should be able to sip that melted moisture through th...

Answer A: How do I know what size ice axe I should get?
Mountaineering ice axes serve a few simple functions: self-arrest, belay, and T-anchor. (And occasionally cutting steps, but hopefully by the time you're doing that, you will already know what you like.) For belay and T-anchors, any length of axe is fine. For self-arrest, however, there are some f...

Answer A: What's the best protection for my knees while bouldering?
Generally, a more controlled and precise technique should reduce undesired knee scraping and banging... But I find that the ability to achieve this precision is, at least to some degree, dependent on your strength reserves, and decreases during a session. Often, several hours into a climbing session ...

Answer A: How can you make a MSR WhisperLite stove simmer?
The short answer: don't. Edit: Instead of simmering on the stove, remove the pot from the flame and keep it insulated to retain heat. See @KateGregory's excellent answer for more details. The long answer: you can reduce the pressure in the fuel bottle, and this will reduce the flow rate of the fuel....

Answer A: Can I mix fuels when using the MSR whisperlite international stove?
Not all fuels mix well. However, in the case of white gas and unleaded gasoline, one is basically a (much) cleaner version of the other, so you're not mixing so much as diluting the white gas with its inferior (for cooking) sibling. Still, you would get better performance out of the remaining white ...

Answer A: What dried vegetarian foods have the highest ratio of calories to volume?
A recent article on The Out Side Out blog by Reiner Thoni ("Fast and Light" Plant Based Nutrition for Mountaineering) has quite a bit of detail on this, and goes well into the details of a balanced diet and some options for variety. The following is quoted verbatim: Carbohydrates - replacing the...
