Answer A: What is this miniature backpack called?
These aren't exactly the style of backpack you asked for, but I knew I'd seen something visually similar. There are some outdoors camera cases that are basically mini-backpacks with carabiners. They've even got places on the outside of the packs for attaching more carabiners or other items. The tw...

Answer A: How long does mayonnaise last unrefrigerated in the back-country?
From what I understand, it doesn't last in the backcountry. The recommended shelf-life for commercial mayonnaise, opened and inside the refrigerator, is two months. The USDA recommends only storing mayonnaise in the refrigerator. From the same page: Perishable food should not be left out more ...

Answer A: Putting in contact lenses when outdoors
I would recommend taking a small container of rubbing alcohol and some cotton balls, as described for cleaning yourself here. Plain old rubbing alcohol kills everything, and is not sticky like an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. A bottle like this one ought to do you pretty well. It should even fit i...

Question Am I likely to need multiple pairs of boots on the Appalachian Trail?
Reading up on a hiking boot size question, I came across this review from Silver Spring, Maryland for a wide hiking boot. This boot has a "lifespan" of 400 miles. Is that typical of a hiking boot? Since the Appalachian Trail (AT) is over 2,000 miles long, should I expect one or more pairs of boots...

Answer A: Is there a tool that can calculate the time of sunrise?
If you're old-school, here is a device I just learned about today (and it should fit into your pack): The Sunsetwheel. It's a sliderule type device, and may take a few minutes to learn how to use it, but it can give you data without having a smart phone on you at all times.

Answer A: Will bug repellent repel deer?
Yes, deer will smell your bug spray. Even if you use all the fancy scent-eliminating sprays, soaps, and clothing detergents they can still smell you if you are sweaty. Most important is the wind factor: Deer will smell you if they are downwind of you. NRA hunting advice for first-time deer hunter...

Answer A: How is ATA measured on a compound bow?
It looks to me, looking at the diagram on this site, that ATA is a measure of the bow itself. I would say that the limbs of the bow are relaxed in this diagram. I hope this article will also be helpful to you. And here is the article: Understanding compound bows, and how to select them.

Answer A: Do reusable "hand coolers" exist?
During the 1996 Summer Olympics, there were vendors all over Atlanta selling these: Cool bandannas. I think they're filled with polymer beads similar to the ones found inside diapers that hold moisture once you get them wet. I wouldn't say it kept me completely cool, but-- being "completely" cool ...

Answer A: How to improvise a signal mirror?
I think someone may have mentioned a knife being an emergency kit essential item. Well, here is one great reason: A knife can be used as an improvised signal mirror. From today's news: Three Lost in Oregon Use Knife as Signal. I try never to go out into the woods without a good knife. I now have...

Question Handling feminine hygiene on multiple-month treks?
How can I handle multiple months of menstrual cycles on a long trek like the Appalachian Trail? I am asking about how to handle the mess. Here are my personal considerations: Using hormonal birth control to skip five months of periods is not an option for me. I'm concerned about the amount of spa...

Answer A: How to carry water in freezing temperatures?
We've been using flexible Platypus reservoirs and have had no trouble thus far. I have knitted an insulation tube (six-stitch I-cord in a sport weight wool) that runs the entire length of the drinking tube-- that's where we've seen the most issues with freezing because of the enormous surface area o...

Answer A: Resources for finding public hunting land
Our family are members of the NRA. If you're interested at all in where to hunt in the US, I would recommend both NRA online articles and their search tool here: National Rifle Association The list includes locations and regulations for public hunting lands in just about every state.

Answer A: Does hiking with a dog in bear country increase or decrease your risk of a bear encounter?
I can say that the behavior of the owner can affect your safety with taking a dog into bear country. Taking a rambunctious dog off-leash into bear country can mean the dog chasing a cub up a tree, which I have seen before on the Appalachian Trail. It's miraculous that the mother bear didn't go afte...
