Answer A: Looking for snorkeling sites with healthy coral
I haven't been diving/snorkeling in 10 years. But, back then I was looking at the U.S. Virgin Islands because the dive/travel websites and travel books I read told of nice snorkeling beaches on those Islands that were easily accessible and not crowded at all. Back then those islands were overlooked a...

Answer A: Backpacking in the Winter (Michigan)
If you've never camped out in winter, I would suggest a trial run. Sleep out in your backyard one night in those temperatures with whatever gear you plan to use for your longer trip. That way you can adjust your gear to your comfort level. You can also try out cooking, washing, changing clothes, etc....

Answer A: How to help birds with water?
We used to use a metal garbage can lid with a brick in it on top of a piece of wide pipe. I'm not sure if that's an option for you because of the size for your balcony. But, the birds loved it because they could take a bath in addition to getting a drink. Of course, we had to clean it out regularly. ...

Answer A: What is the longest stretch of bike trail that parallels a navigable river in the US?
Since you are in the Midwest: If you are looking for something a bit different: The Cuyahoga Valley National Park has a train (Scenic Railroad) that runs through the park. You can take your bike on the train (at a very cheap price). So, you can park on the very northern part of the park, take the tra...

Answer A: How to carry fat, greasy foods like tahini sauce and peanut butter?
I agree with the double-bagging or using a plastic tub inside a bag or the other way around. I think the best thing you can do is to test out various methods/containers before you go. It will allow you to find out what works and will also allow you to practice having to deal with the messy stuff at...

Answer A: Why should I take a pocket knife for wild camping / hiking?
I used to carry a multi-bladed knife when doing very long hikes. I eventually put it in my car where I found many uses for it like cutting off tags on newly purchased clothes. I think I own the knife because I think it is cool to own. : ) The only useful tool on a folding knife might be the small bl...

Answer A: How to prevent sweat washing off insect repellent?
I watch raptor nests which requires me to venture into the woods during the spring and summer. I have found that the best defense against mosquitoes is long sleeves and long pants. I wear a cycling jersey. It is comfortable in the hottest weather because it wicks away moisture. I have lightweight, zi...

Answer A: Cleaning the plastic residue of the inside of my old backpack
I tried using Goo Gone on a small portion of a pack like this. It did not work very well. I then tried a rubber cement eraser (It is basically a hard piece of rubber that gathers up loose pieces of the cement for graphic arts work.) That did not work. Renisis was on the right track. I tried a fine...

Answer A: Staying warm in a lightweight sleeping bag
I would like to also recommend a sleeping pad. They make a big difference for comfort on bumpy ground in addition to adding insulation. I think the closed cell pads work better than the inflatable ones. But, that's a personal choice.

Answer A: How much side protection should sunglasses have?
The best thing to do is to try on the glasses in a store. Take your time and look around with your eyes to see how much is covered. You can also determine if the nose bridge or other part of the frame is in the way of your line of sight. I never buy glasses online unless I am buying a model I have ow...

Answer A: How do I protect my book(s) while backpacking?
If there is a scuba diving store nearby, check to see what they have. I know there is a wide variety of bags and boxes that people use to keep items dry on a boat or underwater. While you may pay a little bit more, you will get something that will last. I have a small Scuba Pro dry bag that I use for...

Answer A: How can I avoid or lessen sweating in a rain jacket?
I make sure the rain jackets I buy have pit zips. They make a big difference. I have also left the jacket at home and used compact umbrellas for hiking when I'm walking on open area paths. In some cases when I'm wearing a jacket I can stick the umbrella behind my head into the jacket and don't have t...

Answer A: How dangerous is a band of coyotes to a lone, unarmed human?
I live in NE Ohio. We have coyotes in a number of the local parks here including the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The only warning the park service gives is that you keep dogs on a leash. They also request that you report any aggressive behavior. The rangers and naturalists I talk to have never had...

Answer A: Super/Krazy Glue on Outdoor Gear
From looking at the Crazy Glue Website and from reading what it can be used for on the packages, I wouldn't try it on fabric, especially synthetic things like a rain jacket. There does appear to be a Crazy Glue for wood and leather. Check the website. http://www.krazyglue.com/products/product.aspx?p...
