Answer A: Is soda can fishing actually effective?
Sure you can use anything as a bait really. Think of a crushed up can as a funky spinner (it's going to spin no matter what you do to it). It's shiny, flashy and moves erratically like an injured fish. I have also seen lures made by folding bottle caps around a hook shank.

Answer A: Drift fishing vs anchor fishing?
If you are bottom fishing with a bait that needs to stay on the bottom you want to anchor. If you drift while dragging the bait. You are likely to hook up to something on the bottom like rocks or weeds and your hook is going to get fouled from lighter weeds anyway. In this circumstance you want to an...

Answer A: Does the fletching length practically influence the arrow?
Fletching is used to stabilize an arrow, stopping it from tumbling. A heavier arrow needs more fletching to help stabilize the arrow. This is usually accomplished by lengthening the fletching rather than broadening it. However more fletching adds drag, and it also has the potential to add more error...

Answer A: Why's the plastic/paper cup training so popular?
http://www.bow-international.com/features/traditional/ask-the-experts-starting-instinctive/ The cup gives you a 3D target to help you focus during instinct training. A flat piece of paper just doesn't excite the subconscious as much as a physical object does.

Answer A: How to determine the thickness of ice?
Start at the edge and work your way out. The ice will usually be thinnest where the water flows INTO to pond or lake, and will be thickest close to the tail. That's because the ice is being pushed that way. Take samples as you work your way out onto the ice to continue to measure the thickness.

Answer A: Any reason to prefer bow-fishing over rod-fishing?
Bow fishing is a sportsmanship hobby like any other. If you like the idea of bow fishing, then try it. If you like the idea of rod and reel fishing, then try it. Which is better? Well, you can only shoot a fish you can see with the bow, and rod fishing lets you hunt for fish in places you couldn't ...

Answer A: What materials from nature can I use to make a hunting bow in the wilderness?
Two different kinds of wood, fiber from bark (to make the string and to hold the wood together while gluing), a knife or hatchet, pitch from a pine tree, fire to temper the wood. The stiff wood needs to be on the front of the bow, the less stiff on the back. Edit: if making a recurve, you need to s...

Answer A: Terminology and cues for reading river water when fly fishing
Riffle vs rapid: a riffle is slow moving over a generally shallow wide flat spot, but has significant turbulence (water moving in all sorts of directions) because of rocks and such. A rapid is fast moving, often deeper section of the river moving faster because it's flowing down a slope. A pool is a...

Answer A: Will it damage my rain gear to store it in a compression sack?
The creases that develop can theoretically compromise rain proofing treatment, especially if those creases cycle (bend and straighten repeatedly) however you can always retreat your gear to get more life out of them. Everything in camping is a compromise between what you can carry and what you need....

It's a combination, Scouting, Orienteering and Reconoiter. Scouting, because you have to find evidence of previous recent passage to find stamp stations. Answer A: What happens when compound bow limbs fail?
The forces are really trying to pull the ends of the bow forward. The bow string is not elastic and so does not store energy. The end of the bow may snap back and hit you uncomfortably, but it's not going to whip back at amazing speeds. The arm will basically just let go, and the stem and other arm w...

Answer A: How often do I need to clean my rimfires?
You should clean all guns at the end of every session of use for a few reasons. I am assuming .22 or .17 cal since you said rimfire. These are the most common rimfire calibers. to prevent residue buildup which can be dangerous if a bullet gets lodged in the barrel, and even more dangerous if you so...

Answer A: Can I reuse the soft fibres from hackle feathers in some other fly tying application?
I use that dubbing to make flies used in tiny hook sabiki rigs. Just something that will wiggle around the hook to attract plankton feeders. I use these to catch sardines, alewives, menhaden, herrings and also sometimes perch catch well on sabiki rigs. Check your local regs, because some places don't...

Answer A: Is a tepee, log cabin, or lean-to configuration most effective for starting a fire?
It honestly depends on conditions and what you are trying to accomplish. If you have nice whittled shavings to start with, the make a log cabin of those, and slowly increase the size of kindling and finally logs added to the fire. If you have branches that are roughly 1 inch, then a teepee is bette...

Answer A: What is the most effective method to clean skin exposed to poison oak?
Ivory soap (for North American campers)...it's the only one that actually cleans and does not leave any residue (which can hold oils) begins. I don't know what other brands of a similar product there is, but I bet you can find your own if you look for ivory soap on the Internet.

Answer A: How do you survive getting towed under a log jam?
Oh....you don't. It would only be a matter of luck, physical strength and breath holding capacity...much emphasis on luck. Answer A: What's a realistic distance to expect boys aged 11-17 to sea kayak in a single day?
Most grown people are good for an hour or two of constant paddling. Children get bored more quickly then they tire. People who go farther are either more athletic or more disciplined. I go fishing in my kayak, and my fishing grounds are about an hour's paddle each way (depending on currents and wind)...

Answer A: Can bears smell food inside dry sacks?
Bears have a seriously sensitive nose. I can't remember the correct values, but they have magnitudes more smell receptors than a bloodhound (I just looked it up, a bear's nose is estimated to be 7 times more sensitive than a bloodhound. Answer A: Is it safe to drink out of a rusty thermos?
Rust is not harmful to consume in either form (red or black) Black rust is magnetite and is what makes cast iron cookware black. What is dangerous is being cut by something rusty, and danger has nothing to do with the rust itself. It is simply a great place for tetanus bacteria to live.
