Question How can I care for a wound that will be immersed in water?
I got a fairly bad cut on my leg, not quite bad enough for stitches but will probably leave a scar. I have a camping trip planned this weekend at a lake where we will go swimming and kayaking. I expect the cut to be partially healed by then, but not to the point where I feel safe leaving it exposed. ...

Answer A: Does putting an item in a microwave oven kill ticks (and other bugs)?
Yes, microwaving will kill ticks. It would do so by making the innards of the bug heat up until it explodes. Pretty gross, so definitely put the clothes inside a bag first! There's a few sources talking about killing ticks via microwave, for example this one and a Quora thread. There's even a video ...

Question What precautions should I take when cooking smelly food in an area with bears?
I'm planning an overnight hiking trip and want to try cooking fish. We will be camping at an established backcountry site on the trail, which has a spot for a tent near a fire ring. However, this is in an area with black bears. I know to hang all my food and other scented items in a bear bag, and no...

Question Does shaving help prevent tick bites?
This one is based on an actual experience - One summer I went on a trail through waist-high grass with a friend. We were both wearing shorts, but my friend had hairy legs, while mine were shaved. After the walk, he discovered probably half a dozen ticks on his legs, while I had none (much to my relie...

Question How much colder is hammock vs. sleeping in a tent?
I just got my first hammock and am eager to try it out! I don't have an underquilt, I was planning to use my current bag and foam pad. In a tent, they would be on the lower end of comfortable for the anticipated low temperatures this week (10-15F margin of the rated value, but I sleep cold). So I'm c...

Answer A: What are good practices for resolving disagreements on a backpacking trip?
I think the most important thing is that you set expectations prior to the trip. Everyone should be on the same page about the planned route, schedule, meals, etc. Of course, planning is different from doing, so you need a social structure to determine how to handle disputes en route. One option is ...

Question What are reasons to prefer waxed canvas vs. nylon bags?
I have been reading some "make your own gear" forums, and making waxed canvas bags seems to be a popular craft. I recently did a little research into ripstop nylon (for another SE, here), and it seems to have the same desirable qualities as waxed canvas - tough, strong, waterproof. However, nylon we...

Question How can I clear spiderwebs in my path while hiking?
I went hiking this weekend in a national forest on trails that see little use. In parts there were many spiderwebs crossing the trail - sometimes full webs (which I could usually, but not always, clear before passing) and sometimes just a few strands of silk between trees, which were nearly impossibl...
