Answer A: Good resources for information about hiking trails near Boston
You could use Map My Hike and use Boston and expand to area and specify how far you want to walk. I have used this site to find local running and trail routes before and have found it useful. Another site is Every Trail which you can access here. As @Pulsehead has suggested using local trail clubs a...

Question Is it better to wear one pair or two pairs of socks while hiking?
From personal experience I tend to wear two pairs of socks, normally some running socks and then my hiking socks on top of that. It helps me avoid blisters. Quite a few of my friends thinks this is nonsense. But with well worn-in boots I always tend to get more blisters if I wear only one pair. Does ...

I often use Outdoors Magic when trying to work out what to buy! Another magazine in the UK I subscribe to is Trail, there parent website, "Live for the Outdoors" can be found here. Should I always take a hard hat if I go scrambling? Scrambling (also known as alpine scrambling) is a method of ascending rocky faces and ridges Quite often when I'm out on ridges in the UK, I rarely see people wearing any kind of safety equipment! I guess it depends on the geology of the area ...

Answer A: How to cheaply introduce someone to backpacking
I would begin thinking about the overnight accommodation. You can do this fairly cheaply in the UK if you stay in a hostel, walkers lodge or a bunk barn. Many of them provide bedding and often food as well. Thus removing the need to take a tent or sleeping bag. Some places even provide tents for a ch...

Answer A: How do I pack a mummy type sleeping bag in a M10 or M28 haversack?
I guess it all depends on the pack size of your mummy sleeping bag. Typically army issues haversacks have dimensions of anything ranging between 12x12" to 13"x18" (30x30cm and 33x45cm). If the compression bag that comes with the sleeping bag does not fit when you place it in the haversack, you could ...

Answer A: What type of mosquito repellent is most effective?
DEET can be harmful to the skin if you suffer from any skin disorders such as Eczema (as I do). I have recently started using a product called Smidge when hiking in Midge infested areas of Scotland. Answer A: Looking for a Topographical map resource?
In the UK your best bet is to use the Ordanance Survey website where you can purchase maps: Ordnance Survey. I've used the getamap feature which is great at creating your own maps! Answer A: How do you determine how long a hike will take?
You could use Naismith's rule which goes as follows: Allow 1 hour for every 3 miles (5 km) forward, plus 1 hour for every 2000 feet (600 metres) of ascent. A lot of hikers in the UK use this as a guide of course bear in mind terrain and altitude! and of course this is not appropriate at higher alti...

It all depends on how far you want to hike! Its probably good to do stretching before any exercise such as hiking or running! Lunges and squats may also help as well.
