Answer A: What range should I expect for a reasonable set of walkie-talkies / two-way radio?
Family Radio Service, the most commonly available walkie talkies, operates on frequencies around 460 MHz. The power is limited to only 500 mW, and as such is very limited. Wikipedia reports that the average range is roughly a mile, which is quite reasonable, given the power levels and poor antennas. ...

Answer A: How much fuel to carry for melting snow?
I've heard from numerable places that when climbing Denali, plan on a cup (About .25 L) of white gas per person per day. I would say that this should be a good rule of thumb for your trip as well. You might be able to get away with a bit less, but this is at least a good rule of thumb. You probably ...

Answer A: What pattern for casual planes should a castaway create on a desert island?
The trick is, high contrast, right angles, and unnatural colors. A ratio of 6:1 for the lines. Letter X or V are best. So, if you find two 6 foot long, one foot wide branches, place them in an X. Scale as you can to get it as large as possible. Source: Wilderness First Aid Field Guide.

Question Pain in the heel after a hike
So, I just went hiking, testing out a pretty new pair of shoes. The test trail was about 6 miles round trip. I started to notice on the way back that the back of my heel was a bit uncomfortable, like it had been rubbing for a while. Is there anything I can do short of getting a new pair of shoes to h...

Answer A: How much water should be carried while hiking in the desert?
It depends a bit but I would recommend twice as much water as you would need in a cooler time of the year for a similar hike. Perhaps 3 times as much if it is particularly hot. As best as possible, don't travel in the heat of the day.

Answer A: How do you properly dispose of human waste while snow camping?
There is really two different answers, one if you are dealing with glacial ice, and one for seasonal snow. For seasonal snow and for solids, your best bet is to bring biodegradable bags, pack your waste in as deep a hole as you can manage, and you should be fine. By deep, I mean a few feet at least...

Answer A: Is it practical to get a satellite phone for communication from remote areas?
What is practical is up to you, but I can give you some information to help you make up your mind. Typical rental prices for a satellite phone are $15-$30 a week (According to this site). The cost per minute is in addition to this cost, and is around $0.50-$3 USD a minute. Weight is usually around ...

Answer A: What should you do if you see a rattle snake?
First of all, you are more likely to hear the rattlesnake than see it. They tend to camouflage themselves quite well, and unless you are paying very close attention, they are easy to miss. I have actually stepped less than a foot from one and not noticed it until I was passing it (It was coiled in a ...

Answer A: What to do if you're bitten by an adder?
Part of the reason that people don't die from snake bites is because they take the proper precautions. And while the bite of an adder isn't likely to kill you, it could make your return trip much more difficult. One thing you do not want to do is to try and suck the venom out, or try and wrap a tour...

In the area where I live, I have periodically seen a rattle snake when hiking, occasionally at the ready to strike pose. What should I do?

Answer A: What precautions should I take to protect myself and my camp from bears?
First of all, DO NOT bring anything smelly into your tent. This includes food, tooth paste, deodorant, or anything else that has a smell. Also, keep fires away from the tent. I recommend setting up a bear triangle campground. Cook your food in one corner, close to that corner–maybe 50 feet aw...

Answer A: As an experienced backpacker in the Eastern US, what should I know before hiking in the Western US?
Here's a brief summary of what I can let you know. I should say this will apply more to the Eastern parts of the state, either North or South. I live in Arizona, which has similar difficulties... Altitude: While not all hikes in the West are done at altitude, there are many more opportunities. I ro...

Question How can one find the difficult to find geocaches?
I've recently been getting into the hobby of Geocaching. However, I'm finding there are many, particularly in cities, that I just cannot find no matter how hard I look for them. They tend to be very small, and often have camouflage of some kind. What tips can you offer to help me improve my rate of f...

Answer A: Does hiking with a dog in bear country increase or decrease your risk of a bear encounter?
In general, I wouldn't recommend it, although it would probably be alright for a short trip. First of all, a bear has no fear of a dog, and they aren't really going to be too deterred. The fact that you are making any noise will let the bear know you are there, and should encourage it to go away, so...

Answer A: If I'm caught in lightning above tree-line, what should I do?
It depends a bit on your circumstance, but it's fair to say that the 3 options you provided would each be okay, given the right circumstance. If you are close to the treeline, it might well be worth running to it. But if it's more than a mile or two away, I wouldn't risk it... Finding an imperfecti...

Question What negative consequences can result from having too much toe room in a shoe
I have large feet, that can be difficult to find the correct size shoe. Typically, I've been wearing size 13, but I have found that I get too many blisters with this size, and I don't have much wiggle room for my toes. I have a pair of size 15s, but they leave a lot of room in the front. I had to get...

Question How much water should be carried while hiking in the desert?
I live in the Arizona desert, and during the summer, despite my best intentions, I always seem to end up doing some hiking in the summer heat. What is a good formula to figure out how much water I need to bring, so that I'm not running out before I'm done, but don't end up carrying 2 liters all the...
