Answer A: How to get out through surf in fins?
Walking backwards is the usual way for a short distance. For a longer distance, I hold my fins in my hands and wade out. When it's deep enough you put them on. This is a bit of a skill. Wait for a wave to pass, then take a breath and put one fin on. Accept that your head will go underwater as you d...

Answer A: Nose-diving when catching a wave on a longboard
There are three factors that might cause this. Lack of Paddling Speed If you are moving too slowly, you will be hit by the wave rather than catching it. You should be feeling like you are joining the wave. This will require some time to build up paddling strength and technique. The last three stroke...

Question What do mountaineers eat and drink on the day of an Everest summit?
I was watching Everest (2015) on the weekend and was wondering what the mountaineers do for sustenance on the day they attempt to summit. It appeared they left around midnight, aiming for a 2pm summit, returning to camp after dark. So even if things went well, they would be looking at 24 hours of c...

Question What clothing would be suitable for hiking and camping in 0°C?
I intend to hike and camp where the forecast temperature is around freezing. It can get windy in exposed areas, but I would be starting low and camping amongst the snow gums. During the day air temperature is typically 5C. Can be windy, 30kmh up to 60km (although not if you trust this forecast). ...

Answer A: What are the criteria for tent for one person
Since you are not carrying the tent, I would buy a 2 person tent for the extra space. This will allow more room for clothes, sleeping stuff, changing your clothes etc. If it rains it would be easier to stay away from the wall of the tent. If you are carrying the tent, then you need to think about we...

Answer A: If my depth varies +- 2m when breathing in and out, what's going wrong?
I think this means you are varying the volume of your body too much or holding a full breath too long. Try holding your chest in a more consistent position as you breathe.

In Australia, you are advised to call the Rescue Coordination Centre on 1800 641 792 if possible to ensure a search and rescue operation is not commenced. See http://www.amsa.gov.au/search-and-rescue/rcc/

Question What happens if I inadvertently set off a personal locator beacon?
I'm considering buying a personal locator beacon. As I understand it they should only be activated in case of dire emergency. What happens if it is set off accidentally while at home? What about somewhere remote? If it makes a difference, I'm in Australia.

What exercises can I do at home to get fit for surfing? I would like to improve my fitness so that when I travel to a surf break I'll be able to enjoy myself rather than just being exhausted.

Question What temperatures can I expect in caves compared to surface?
If the daily air temperature is between 0 °C to 14 °C, what sort of temperature would be found within caves? Will it be any colder or warmer? The caves in question (Wombeyan) do not go terribly far underground.

Question Tent placement?
Having found the general area in which to camp, what should I look for when choosing the exact location for my tent? I'm thinking specifically about conditions along the east coast and great dividing range of Australia. Typically this means gum trees and various low bushes. I'm not likely to be stay...
