Hiking with goats? I asked around (including on this site: Hiking with a mule or two?) about hiking with a mule or a horse. Some people on other sites actually suggested hiking with pack goats. (for weights on the order of 5-10-20kg/10-20-50lbs, depending on hike) Is this something people actually do? Does it work ou... (more) |

Hiking with a mule or two? For an older guy (say 65+) who likes to hike alone - are a mule or two a help or a hindrance? Maybe a mule for the pack, and a second mule to ride when I get really old? Historically people preferred to ride a mule - I am not sure it is still practical nowadays :-) (more) |

Cat-safe mosquito repellent? I am, ahem, itching to camp on the Bruce Trail (Ontario, Canada) in July. I have two kittens at home. What should I use as mosquito repellent? I am afraid to use the ubiquitous DEET-based spray as it poisonous to cats (and my kittens are fairly small, so it doesn't take much). (more) |

Do I still need to hang my food if I have two large dogs? I have two large dogs - a German Shepherd and a Presa Canario. I hike alone with my dogs in black (not grizzly) bear country. Do I still need to hang my food? Or will the three of us be able to convince a bear that um... maybe next camp has better food? (more) |

How do I make people not be afraid of me and my dogs? I like to hike, and I have two large dogs (German Shepherd, Presa Canario). After a long hike I look reasonably homeless (long hair, unshaven, muddy). Combined with two large, potentially dangerous dogs, it might scare off some people. How can I make sure we do not scare people / make them more co... (more) |

What can I feed my dogs on a week-long hike? I am planning to hike for a week with two dogs. Each dog eats 4 cups of kibble a day, that's about 14 liters of kibble per week. The issue is the volume not the weight. What can I feed them so that I do not have to carry so much? (more) |

How to carry a German Shepherd up and down ladders on the trail? I am planning to hike a section of the Bruce Trail next year with my German Shepherd. It's mostly low hills but every once in a while I run into vertical ladders. How can I carry my German Shepherd up and down ladders? He is not trained with ladders in any way right now but I can work on it, I have... (more) |

What are the trade offs between kayak and canoe for solo multiday trips? I would like to be able do trips with the following characateristics one day: Solo. May do in combination with other paddlers, but my primary interest is getting out there on my own. Multi-day trips on Canadian lakes/slow-moving rivers. Not into white water at this time. Relatively remote locatio... (more) |
