Answer A: How stuffed is a sleeping bag stuffed in its recommended stuff sack size?
The recommendation is mostly so people buy the correct aftermarket stuff sack size. If I go to buy a stuff sack (we have, me and my partner, a combined 7 or 8 sleeping bags), I actually test the stuffing myself. You can follow the recommended volume and try to buy a stuff sack with the corresponding...

Answer A: Identifying a plant seen in Cyprus
This seems to be Carissa Macrocarpa, commonly known as Natal plum, or another related species. If one searches for common plants in Cyprus, it does come up easily. I am guessing that the climate in Cyprus is very similar to its native south african Eastern Cape and that's why it's been introduced as ...

Question What constitutes mountain exposure when hiking or scrambling?
In this question, I focus on the fall exposure component. While I understand the perception of danger will vary from person to person, I'm having trouble characterizing mountain exposure. I can see where when you reach YDS (Yosemite Decimal System) 3rd class, it's evident that overall steepness usual...

Answer A: Under what conditions does heating a tent artificially make objective sense?
In my humble opinion, there is no condition where heating a tent makes objective sense. The impracticality of heat generation usually means that travelers who would benefit or need heating the most (circumpolar travelers) are the ones who will most probably skip it. In that sense, the decision for al...

Answer A: Hiking trails between Mt Moosilauke and Rumney NH
From what I can see on USGS Topo maps and aerial imagery, you definitely need to walk on Breezy Pt Rd and NH118 to cross Baker River before getting on Three Ponds trail. Can't see any apparent crossing/bridge anywhere else. As for a trail from Stinson Lake south to Rumney, I can't find any reference...

Answer A: What does contouring mean in the context of navigation/orienteering?
The answer is really dependent on language, I think. Being from a French-speaking part of the world, I can definitely say that even in orienteering/mountain traveling, the meaning of contouring would imply simply going around a feature, not necessarily at a fixed elevation. I could contour around a f...

Answer A: How to check whether a tent is prone to ants eating holes in tents?
I don't think there is one tent material that will prevent ants from cutting through, unless you want a ridiculously heavy kevlar tent. All classic materials are definitely not sturdy enough. I know of one solution that can solve the problem: coat the tent with permethrin. Not exactly nature-friend...

Answer A: What are the simplest 5000 m mountains to hike?
If you're looking for close to home, I'm thinking about Mount Ararat (Turkey), Damavand (Iran), Elbrus (Russia) although this last one has glacier travel to contend with. Then you have to go to south America for easy 5000m peaks. Or Kilimandjaro in Africa.

Answer A: Two person sleeping bag liner for sleeping bag/staying in a hut?
Do you mean sleeping bag liners? If so, I've never seen a 2-person liner although they seem to exist. Consider buying two and going to a tailor/seamstress to get it modified. It shouldn't be expensive at all. I get lots of gear modified/fixed and after finding the right person, it costs me peanuts.

Answer A: How best to hold/aim a Garmin InReach for satellite messaging?
next to a small river so I could step out into the clear to get at least some view of the sky That's really the bare minimum for good signal. This will have much more impact than how you hold it. If you can go to a clear high ground not too far away, it will help. If not, there isn't much to do ...

Answer A: Usability difference between 0.1 micron 0.2 micron filter bottles?
Leaving that aside and just focusing on getting the water from the bottle, through the filter and into your mouth; are there significant differences? No. Water flow as I have experienced myself between Sawyer (0.1) and MSR (0.2) fibrous filters wasn't significantly different. I have seen a big ...

Answer A: Is there a recommended type of can for building a penny stove?
While not a traditional penny stove, I built Tetkoba's Capillary Hoop Stove out of 3 cans of Red Bull like he did. It took a lot of force to push the hoop inside the main body, but it never split. It's quite sturdy fully assembled, so the Red Bull cans get my approval.
