Answer A: How do you safely ascend and descend the Half Dome cable route?
How do you do it safely? It is safe. Just do it. Those six deaths were over 100 years. Recently there are as many as 50,000 people doing that route per year. Even if those six deaths were all in the last year, that's only a 0.012% death rate. But those weren't all in one year. The real risk is...

Answer A: How can you tell if roadkill is safe to eat?
There are three simple rules to roadkill. If all three aren't answered yes, it is not what I would consider "safe". Did you witness or cause the incident? This is the best was to guarantee it's fresh. Is it a legal harvest? (check your states Department of Natural Resources web site) Do you kno...

Answer A: How would you help a snapping turtle cross the road?
I've actually driven up to a very large (more than 1 foot across) snapping turtle. While it may not be the answer you want, you simply don't. Things I've tried: This is based on actual experience. Lift them from behind: While easy to run around behind them, it doesn't work. Little known fact,...

Answer A: How do you keep rodents out of your vehicle when it's parked at the trailhead?
Stop coating your wires with peanut butter! In all seriousness though, squirrels can and will eat wires. However this is a very unlikely occurrence, as noted by ShemSeger in comments. I have known exactly ONE person it ever happened to and the car was at their house, not a trail head. You coul...

It just oxidized the aluminum. A hard scrubbing will remove the oxidation. Just use a green scrubby. If you need extra abrasive that is safe, tooth paste will usually work.

Question Is it possible to use a flint and steel with wet tinder?
We carry a flint and steel instead of lighters to light our camp stoves when backpacking because the flint and steel always works and weighs very little. One of our routine camp activities is to try and start a real fire with one. Whenever I can find dry tinder, things go very well. However withou...

Answer A: Where can I buy bear banger launcher and ammunition and have them shipped to US?
Previous FFL note was wrong. According to Sutton, a special license is required to possess these. They require a Explosive Pest Control Device (EPCD) License which must be obtained from the Federal ATF. Once you have a license Sutton will sell to US customers. Read carefully when looking online. ...

Answer A: How to keep small rocks and stones out of hiking boots?
Lightweight gaiters are your best option. They do a very good job of keeping things out of your shoes. If those are also too hot for you then you will have to reconsider the effort it takes to change your stride/walk so that you're not kicking up as much detritus. It will come down to which is les...

Answer A: How to safely store a propane/butane/isobutane canister in a vehicle?
I kept a spare in my trunk for two years in the southeastern US and I never had a problem (YMMV). This, like most things in life, is not perfectly safe. So you should decide if you really need to store this in your car. If you do, things you should consider: Keep it somewhere that minimizes the ...

Question Alternatives for sealing Mylar food packs?
We are making our own dehydrated meals with mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. This is very cost effective, but less so if you need to spend lots of money for one of the specialty tools for sealing these bags. What cost effective alternatives are there to buying a sealer just for this purpose?

Answer A: Identification of bugs on porch
From your pictures, those look like discarded cicada husks. They're not "alive". You can just knock them off with whatever tool you prefer for such things (broom, paint scraper, etc.) There is no real need to prevent them. The cicadas molt and move on, leaving the husks.

Answer A: How can I keep outdoor critters outdoors?
Rodents are tenacious beasts. We've seen river rats in our area dig through concrete footings to get into storage areas. As long as it's just mice they can't usually get through concrete or stone. However rebuilding your dwelling with new materials may not be an option. Failing that, doing everyt...

Answer A: How to determine the length of poles for a tent
Okay, it is a bit hard to tell the model, so here is the process you'll need. Stake the tent out. Any old stakes will do. Many of the medicines which work for ticks also work well against mosquitoes. Answer A: Is 8 miles of unpaved gravel road a lot for a old-ish consumer road car to take in normal weather?
Just about any car can handle a good gravel road, with the notable exception being low slung performance cars (cars with very little ground clearance). That being said, "gravel roads" vary a LOT. I have seen roads that were the next thing to pavement and gravel roads that had rock gullies which cou...

Possibly crayfish burrows or "chimneys". Identifying by burrow holes can be tricky though. Are they near any water? That would increase the likelyhood that they are crayfish burrows. Similar examples: http://www.pbase.com/redsloughwma/image/142389118 Crawfish chimneys are smokestack-looking...

Answer A: Stove/fuel setup for harsh conditions
For cold and high altitude, you will want to use white gas. White gas is superior to other liquid fuel options (kerosene, etc) and will be easier to get started in the cold. The answer to "is it too much" is extremely subjective. Is this strictly too much? No. Are there some things you can trim back if you want? Yes. I like to hike light, but not ultralight and this would be far too much weight for me to consider now but is almost exactly where I started out. Over ...

In the situation you describe, mismatched gear is not going to provide what you want. Unfortunately the answer is the news most people leas...

Answer A: Why not use a cotton base layer?

Answer A: Can a 'Flameless ration heater' be used to safely start a fire?
