<p>Let's say you want to be a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyageurs">voyageur</a>, canoeing on a river like the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Saskatchewan_River">North Saskatchewan</a>. (We'll leave aside the current state of the beaver pelt industry.)</p> <p>What do you have to do differently to travel upriver, rather than down? Is there any particular equipment that's more useful when traveling upriver? Are there any river/weather conditions that would make the journey easier?</p>
