Does a softshell/hardshell specific DWR product make a difference?

E.g. Nikwax has different DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment products for softshells and hardshells.
Are these actually different products (other than in label)?
Can one substitute one for the other without noticeable differences?
Clearly it makes sense for the manufacturer to try and sell two products instead of one, so their word cannot really be trusted. (And the linked Nikwax pages don't really have any information to begin with.)
