How effective are Air (1) Pistols and (2) Rifles, bought in Canadian retailers, against dangerous animals?

My family lacks any firearms license or training whatsoever. To what degree can store-bought (Canadian Tire, Home Hardware)

  1. Air Pistols

  2. Air Rifles

fend off wild dangerous animals? Particularly coyotes, wolves, bears and snakes? Please answer separately for both air pistols and rifles. Are pistols less effective than rifles?

Whilst leaf peeping in Nova Scotia this past month, my family stumbled up on multiple cougars to our horror! Fortunately, we never hike on our own. Our power in numbers and air horn scared these coywolfs away!

It doesn't really matter where you buy the air gun. What matters is that (1) it's an air gun and (2) what type of animal you're worried about.
