How would PLA stand up to cold and wet environments?

I am thinking about making some trekking pole baskets with my 3D printer in PLA, the originals having been worn out a long time ago.

PLA has problems with heat, how does it do with cold? They won't cost very much but if they break right away it might be a problem.

Why not print out a small rod or something, put it in the freezer, and see how brittle it is for yourself?
